Wicking Vicar

Status: Customizations Complete
Project 1

YouTube Video Section & Page Cleanup

The above video shows upgrades to Wicking Vicar, an established Shopify store selling performance clergy shirts, children's toys, and necklaces.

The Home and About Us pages each featured the same video uploaded as a file in Shopify's admin. It was oversized and prone to buffering. I also discovered the Home page displayed the video twice while the About Us page ran it on a non-stop loop. Rather than compressing a file that size, I suggested hosting and embedding it on YouTube.

This project involved:

  • Removing the oversized video from both pages, including the duplicate on the home page
  • Building a custom Video with Text section that streams the video from YouTube. This video plays once rather than looping
  • Moving the About Us content from the Home page to the About Us page

The site is now cleaner and the video section flows better. The client and I have more upgrades planned, which I'll include here once they're live.

Project 2

Coming Soon Feature and Email Signup Fix

The above video shows the next round of upgrades to Wicking Vicar: a Coming Soon badge for upcoming products and an email signup fix.

4 new toys were added to the store but, since they had no inventory, Shopify automatically labeled them "Sold out" on both the collection and product pages. The client wanted shoppers to know these products were new and requested they be marked as "Coming Soon".

4 email signup forms were also created in Shopify's Forms app, one for each new product, so shoppers could be notified when they were available. Instead, a single form showed on every product page in the store, including established products that were already in stock.

This project involved:

  • Replacing the "Sold out" badge with a "Coming soon" badge on the collection page and product pages
  • Creating a product metafield to hold each new product's form ID, matching the form created in the Forms app
  • Updating the product template so each new product displays its own signup form and products without a form ID display none
  • Removing the signup form from all existing products

Shoppers now see which products are "Coming Soon" and can sign up to be notified once they're in stock. Each signup goes to the correct email list so the client knows exactly who to notify when each product arrives.
